Treasures of the Tar Pits
book DESIGN
BRIEF
Give the existing Treasures of the Tar Pits book a facelift - so more people will buy it!
PROCESS
Not thrilled with the idea of a “facelift”, I envisioned a totally new book – new design, new content. The problem was, nobody had time to write it. Rather than give up, I scoured the museum and all its publications for content I could "steal" - if it was in print somewhere, it was approved by somebody at some point! I ended up adding 21 pages of “new” content, just by looking around. The updated design is easier to skim – it has sidebars, infographics, and lots of new photos. Nobody cared except me, until it sold double the number of copies year over year (compared to the old version).

Early sketch for an infographic, to convince a curator that I could fit 65 million years onto a single spread (she didn't believe me!)
65 million years on a single spread - see, it fits!
